[Column] Why global owners must take action to stop nuclear contaminated water dumping

[Lee Won-young’s Column] Democratic Candlelight Solidarity to Stop Nuclear Contaminated Water Dumping

In line with the ‘2024 GLObal citizen MArch to stop nuclear wastewater(GLOMA)’

The people, who are number one, must stop the tyranny of power, who is number two.

“A scorpion begged to cross the river on the frog’s back. While crossing, the scorpion’s eyes see the back of the frog’s neck. Its killer instinct kicks in. It stings that frog. In the end, the frog dies and the scorpion itself falls into the river and dies.”

It is one of the widely known La Fontaine fables. It is a fable that tells us that the scorpion’s instinct is to sting whoever it is targeting, even though it knows that it will eventually die with it. This story teaches us that the instinct of all living things is to simply do things instinctively without knowing whether the outcome will be in one’s favor.

The physiology of power to sting first like a scorpion

Humans are also living organisms, and therefore the power created by humans also has the characteristics of living organisms. Gun violence occurs when guns fall into the hands of selfish and cruel people. Some powerful people who hold power in their hands are determined to commit evil whether the people die or the country collapses. Putin, Zelensky, and Netanyahu are no exception. Wars are the result of being controlled by the hormones of those in power, and other factors are just excuses.

The US president can withdraw from the climate agreement, so he does. ‘No matter what happens to the climate crisis, my stinger is still alive and well.’ The same goes for the Japanese Prime Minister. He boasts that he will throw away the contaminated water from the nuclear power plant because he can do so. ‘Whether the sea is polluted or not, my poisonous needle is worth using now.’

The world of power is defined by the world of gangsters. The way for the second-in-command to check his level of power is to ‘rebel’ against his leader. After making the group nervous by doing something absurd, he gets punched by the angry leader. Then, the second-in-command is happy to have confirmed the power of the leader and treats the leader with respect. This is the physiology of a gangster and the physiology of the world of power.

The people who are number one should block the tyranny of power who are second-in-command

But who are the bosses in today’s world? In the past, they would have been kings and presidents, but now it is different. Nowadays, we live in a world where the people are the boss. Times are changing that way. IT technology is supporting this trend. We live in a technological age where the meaning and values of each person are directly related to the decision-making of the community. We are moving away from the era of representative democracy, where decision-making had no choice but to be delegated to representatives.

In general, those black hearted in power who are incompetent wait until the people, who are sovereign, come out in active opposition. Until then, they will continue to act ‘weird’. It is the instinct of those who do not have the ability to judge universal values and what is right.

The world is driven by the hormones of those in power rather than good will or justice. The second-in-commands are so insecure about their status that their subconscious hopes that the people who are their leaders will punish them. This is because only then do hormones that make them feel at ease are released.

The ‘Korea and Japanese Citizens Walking March to Prevent Dumping of Radioactive Water’ held in Kyoto, Japan in June 2023.

Who’s the owner? Make it clear

The global people’s ‘rebellion against nuclear contamination’ also stems from this principle. Those in power became anxious. The threat of ‘discharging contaminated water from nuclear power plants into the sea’, which on the surface seems like a ‘scorpion’s sting’, is actually the regressive instinct of those in power. Then we must stop them. We too must warn them about their foolish actions. We must express our opinions clearly. Who is the real owner of the world and its countries?

Democracy, which operates as a representative system, has limitations. Rather than using a designated driver, you should drive your own car. Even if we enter the era of autonomous driving, won’t the owner give orders directly? The current representative system is full of second-in-commands who rebel against the orders of their masters.

Errors in power are ruining the earth and humanity, but popular resistance is currently minimal. This kind of violence can be repeated at any time. Tragedy must be prevented. Only the rejection of the people, the real owners and bosses, will make this possible.

Then what should we do to reject them? We have a candlelight democracy that is the envy of the world. There are the people and leaders of the Republic of Korea who are demonstrating that mature sense of ownership. In each country, there are people’s movements and their leaders that are similar to our candlelight democracy movement. There are such people’s movement groups not only in advanced European countries but also in Japan.

And we must overcome the current tyranny of power hormones and stand in solidarity with politicians who pursue good intentions. The governor and lawmakers of New York and Massachusetts who led the suspension of water discharge in the United States in the summer of 2023 are such politicians. Such politicians are few, but they exist with probability.

The people must gather together with these politicians and express their will to firmly reject the errors and misjudgments of these second-in-commands who have succumbed to their bad hormones. The global people must follow the trend of this era and express their resolute will as the owners of the global village who are becoming leaders.

On June 8th, the ‘2024 GLObal citizen MArch to stop nuclear wastewater’ will be held in Kyoto. The purpose of this march is as explained above. The utopia we desire is not defined by any outcome. It exists in the process and in between.
