Civic groups and fisheries groups have taken action outside Busan ahead of the release of contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant. Civic groups continued their campaign against the release of contaminated water from Fukushima in Japan, while fishermen started a campaign to publicize the safety of seafood throughout the country.

The Korean-Japanese Citizens’ Walking March for Stopping the release of contaminated Water, led by anti-nuclear activists, announced that it had arrived in Shimonoseki, Japan on the morning of the 16th. It has been about a month since they left Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on the 18th of last month and headed to Japan via Busan on the 15th. They will walk 1,100 kilometers from Shimonoseki to Tokyo to announce the need to stop releasing contaminated water.

Lee Won-young, the leader of the march, said, “We are continuing our march despite the hot weather, being welcomed by Japanese people who are interested in safety in Japan. The problem of contaminated water is something that the Korean and Japanese people should solve together.”

The Headquarters of the Campaign Against Dumping Contaminated Water in Fukushima, which received “100,000 signatures from Busan citizens,” will also head to Japan on the 24th to deliver signatures. Jeon Wi-bong, a member of the executive committee, said, “We will deliver 100,000 Busan citizens’ signatures to the Japanese National Assembly along with the Japanese civic group ‘Don’t dirty the sea anymore.’ We are also pushing for a press conference and a meeting.”

Fishermen are conducting a nationwide campaign to promote the safety of aquatic products to the public and appeal to the difficulties of the fisheries industry, as consumption of aquatic products has sharply declined due to the controversy surrounding the discharge of contaminated water in Fukushima.

On the 14th, the “Our Fisheries Protection Movement Headquarters” held its first “Seafood Protection Relay Campaign” at the Busan Fisheries Cooperative Jagalchi Top Market meeting room in Jung-gu, Busan. More than 100 people attended the site, including Ji Hong-tae, chairman of the Our Fisheries Protection Movement Headquarters, Noh Dong-jin, the head of the Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, the union president of the Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives in Busan, and local fishermen’s organizations.

The movement headquarters handed out 1,000 fans to the citizens with the words, “As a result of about 30,000 radioactivity tests on aquatic products from 2011 to the present, all of them meet the standard,” and marched to Jagalchi Market. In addition, it was decided to hold a relay campaign in a total of six regions, including Gyeongbuk, Gangwon-do, Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, Jeju-do, and Chungcheong, by next month.
